Leadership in Times of Uncertainty

With Hugh O'Doherty, PhD.

September 18-20, 2011
Begins with dinner, ends with lunch

Designed for anyone working in an organizational setting, be it political, educational, or non-profit, this seminar generates essential diagnostic and strategic understanding, as well as personal insight and skills, for the exercise of leadership in a volatile, global, uncertain world in which traditional forms of leadership are no longer appropriate—or adequate. The purpose is to help participants strengthen their ability to lead in complex settings, and use their power and authority wisely and effectively—and stay alive in the process. Drawing from several disciplines, the course develops a framework for diagnosing and intervening in political, social and organizational systems to generate adaptive work. Biology provides a basis for understanding the concepts of change and adaptation. Political science and business management offer perspectives for examining the functions of power and authority, and for distinguishing these from leadership. Social psychology provides insight into the dynamics of social systems, group behavior, and an approach for diagnosing productive and dysfunctional social behavior. Skills focus on discernment of the adaptive challenge facing an organizational system as opposed to technical problems, advancing the purpose of the organization, orchestrating tension in service of systemic change, listening to and communicating the "song beneath the words," leveraging informal versus formal authority, differentiating self from roles, being on the dance floor and in the balcony, and giving the work back to the group.

In Northern Ireland, he directed the Inter-Group Relations Project, an initiative bringing together political and community leaders in Ireland to establish protocols for political dialogue. Hugh has consulted extensively with a wide variety of clients including the Irish Civil Service, the American Leadership Forum, the Episcopalian Clergy Leadership Program, the National Conservation Leadership Institute, and the Mohawk Community Leadership Program in Canada. He has also consulted in Bosnia, Croatia, and Cyprus and has addressed the United Nations Global Forum on Re-Inventing Government. He is presently engaged as a third-party member of an Armenian-Turkish Dialogue process, and also working with the government of Nepal on a negotiation and leadership development program. Leading with Story: Engaging People and Organizations

With Lani Peterson, Psy.D & Catherine Conant

November 7-9, 2011

"It is important for leaders to know their stories, to get them straight, to communicate them effectively, and above all to embody in their lives the stories that they tell." - Howard Gardner, Leading Minds

Leaders are grounded in the stories of their own origin, can clearly articulate the formative stories of their current organization and are already imagining the stories of future initiatives. They have embodied these stories of past, present and future and can convey them with a personal presence that both engages and inspires.

Likewise, organizations have instructive stories of their own. If used well, stories can clearly articulate an organization's current mission; align staff, clients and expanded network around a clear picture of who they are and what they do well, as well as engage all partners in a collaborative vision of future progress. An organization's stories are the vehicle that enables it to share its purpose with others in a way that connects, inspires, and affirms.

Too often these powerful stories remain buried, untold or deemed unimportant to an individual or company's identity or progress towards current success and potential growth.

During the retreat, participants will be introduced to the power of story as a tool for insight, connection and influence. We will discuss story structure, explore prompts for uncovering the important stories of an organization, provide the template for creating a comprehensive story, and explore ways to use a story to illustrate the important principles and values underlying actions.

Through individual and group exercises, participants will obtain personal insight into both their own and their organization's defining stories, as they learn how to use story to clarify mission, strengthen teams, build alignment, and convey the essence of who they are, what they do well, and where they are planning to go.

Whether your focus is inspiring a mission, clarifying goals, building a team, or growing a vision, come learn about story as a valuable tool towards achieving your goals.

"A story is a fact wrapped in an emotion that can compel us to take action and so transform the world around us." - Robert Dickman
